Thesis Title: The character of Armida, and the processes of operatic adaptation (working title)

About

As a way of looking at reception, adaptation and representation in early opera I'm following the figure of Armida, a highly successful operatic character adapted from Tasso's "Gerusalemme liberata" (1580) used in over 100 staged adaptations during the 17th and 18th centuries in both Italian and French traditions.  In this project I'm studying the patterns of signification through which this character was constituted, with reference to music theatre texts including Quinault and Lully’s "Armide" (1686), Pallavicino and Corradi's "La Gerusalemme Liberata" (1687) and Dennis and Eccles’ "Rinaldo and Armida" (1698).
