Dr. Salama's current interests in both teaching and research involve working in areas that include knowledge based design, sustainable design (architectural-urban) from the social/community related perspective, sustainable project delivery processes, human-environment interaction and post-occupancy and sustainable building evaluation. While applying the experiential and active learning models, his major interest is in research-based teaching, and devising community and urban outreach programs that help incorporate knowledge generated from research findings into teaching.
Over a period of over 15 years, Dr. Ashraf Salama taught a considerable number of courses in different institutions including Al Azhar University-Egypt; North Carolina State University-USA; Misr International University-Egypt; King Fahd University-Saudi Arabia; University of Napoli-Italy; and Qatar University-Qatar. His experience includes teaching courses in environmental perception, architectural programming/briefing, design methods and theories, applications of socio-behavioral studies in design, and architectural, urban, and community design studios.
At SPACE-Queen's University Belfast, Dr. Salama teaches and contributes to:
- 2nd year Design and Communication (1st Semester)
- 5th year Design and Communication (2nd Semester)
- 5th year Specialist Elective: Socio-Cultural and Behavioral Factors in Design
- 5th year Dissertation Supervision
- Contributing lectures in 1st and 2nd years Principles of Design Modules. Lectures address the meaning and cultural evolution of architecture, hierarchical understanding of space and the spatial environment.
